Rising Minds Benefits Show - Friday, April 16th, 2010 7 pm to 10 pm

Student bridges music and community

Lowell SUN Article By Rachel R. Briere, rbriere@lowellsun.com
Updated: 03/30/2010 08:25:34 AM EDT

LOWELL -- Josh Beetler believes in the power of a tune. The 22-year-old UMass Lowell student says crafting melodies together creates a sense of community.

"Music can help people thousands of miles away no matter if they can hear it or not," he said. "With music, everyone can come together and celebrate regardless of what they're celebrating." As the president of the university's Performance Club and a volunteer at Rising Minds, a local non-profit which through education outreach tries to bridge cultural, economical and developmental gaps worldwide, Beetler was interested in merging the two for a common cause. The result became a benefit concert at the Eggroll Café in Lowell next month. "One of the things we as a group want, is to help out by building a sense of community," Beetler said. "This isn't just a concert, it's a strong connection between music and community." The acoustic show will feature four musicians -- all UMass Lowell music performance majors -- Beetler, Travis McGuire, Matt Corcoran and Clara Berry. All are diverse and unique in their execution on stage, Beetler says, making the evening palatable for everyone's tastes. "It's the club's first show. We're setting the bar high by helping a great cause with great music," Beetler said.

All proceeds from the show will benefit one of Rising Mind's projects -- Los Patojos, a school in Jocotenango, Guatemala. Los Patojos offers classes to children focusing on skill development, critical thinking, academics, creative expression and self-esteem. The concert at the hip college klatch on University Avenue around the corner from North Campus is Friday, April 16, from 7 to 10 p.m. There is a $5 cover charge. There will also be raffle tickets for gift certificates to local eateries as well as items from Guatemala.

Beetler, who grew up in Taunton and has lived in Lowell for the last five years while attending college, wants to use his talents on guitar, drums, bass and piano to bring people together. He says no matter the age, language, culture, religion or race, a song can touch anyone's soul and move them into action. He added, "Before language, there was music. It's one of the few characteristics that separates us from animals. Animals can't create music, but even a newborn can react and move to the beat." For more information on the benefit show, e-mail joshbeetler@gmail.com or visit www.eggrollcafe.com. For more on Rising Minds and Los Patojos, visit www.risingminds.org.

Michael Baier's Photo Exhibit

Michael Baier's Photo Gallery - Friday, February 12th, 2010 7 pm to 10 pm

On Friday, February 12th, 2010, Michael Baier will be showcasing his collection of photographic work. The reception will be from 7 pm to 10 pm.

Keltic Art of Arthur Ketchen

Celtic Paintings of Arthur W. Ketchen

Painter, calligrapher, printmaker Arthur W. Ketchen will exhibit paintings at Egg Roll Cafe, 110 University Avenue, Lowell, Massachusetts, from April 3-30. There will be an Opening from 6 PM-8 PM on April 18th. Arthur W. Ketchen is an artist who draws upon the visual culture of his ancient Irish, Welsh, Scots roots to creat an art which is at once abstract and filled with meaning using both older media such as Casein and Egg Tempera, and Watercolor, and modern, such as Acrylic, Collage, and Watersoluble Oil.

An example of Arthur W. Ketchen's work with ancient themes: The Hanter Dro series is based upon a combination of square pattern motifs combined with a tight interlace that correlates to a hanter dro-a Breton dance where the participants are very closely linked when they join hands. Eight Nations refers to the actual eight nations where a Celtic cultural legacy is both the base and a continuing presence: Wales, Scotland, Ireland, Isle of Man, Brittany(in France), Cornwall(In England), Asturias, Galicia (in Spain). By linking these together in a spiral and interlace pattern Arthur Ketchen emphasizes what Celts have in common and certainly how they have combined in the New World(United States, Canada, New Zealand, Australia).

Arthur W. Ketchen is a calligrapher for several local organizations. He is Assistant Editor of Celtic Beat magazine. Arthur W. Ketchen is also noted as a teacher of Calligraphy and Celtic Design. He is best known as the designer of the National Parks monument for St. Patrick's On The Acre in Lowell, Massachusetts.

Distinghuished Irish American harpist and singer Kate Chadbourne will be giving a feature performance.

"Searching"-Giovanna's Photo Exhibition at Eggroll Cafe

On Friday, March 6th, 2009, from 8pm-10pm, photographic artist Giovanna Aviles will be exhibiting her collection entitled "Searching." The reception will be featuring jazz band Moving Forward.

Artist Note:
For the past several years, it seems I have been doing one thing more than anything else: searching. Searching for protection, but also for comfort, adventure, and a revelation with my eyes closed.  I feel like a little girl who would love to spend her days sleepwalking through this big world. While it may seem like she doesn’t know her way most of the time, I know what she is looking for and together I am sure we will find it.

Linda

From 8pm-10pm, on Friday, February 6th, 2009, there will be a reception to celebrate the photography of artist and student of UMASS Lowell, Curran Kelleher. During the reception, local folk band, Bella Birds will be the musical entertainment.

Artist Note:
I'm Curran Kelleher, a computer science student at UMass Lowell. I spent August 2007 to August 2008 in Darmstadt, Germany, studying, working, and traveling. I took lots of pictures, and chose the best of the year to put up at the Eggroll Cafe.

I'm infinitely grateful that I had the opportunity to live abroad for a year. I saw so much, and I learned a lot. I was humbled by learning German and being forced to adapt - to bag my own groceries, to be served coffee in mugs rather than paper cups, to use public transportation all the time, and to try to fit into society as a stranger in a strange land. I was awed by the beauty of Europe, and the cultural differences - the way people actually live day to day - which had before only been distant and irrelevant to my American life.

I hope that through these photographs and blog entries I can share with those interested at least a piece what its like to spend time abroad. The journey as a whole has transformed my perspective of the human race. Unfortunately, the entirety of a year's experience is inexpressible. It's made up of fragments, so the best I can do is show you a few fragments.

All photos are on sale for $30 each, frame and all. Please feel free to contact me at curran.kelleher@gmail.com for any reason. Links to the original blog and all the many photos from my year in Europe can be found at curransoft.com.

I hope you enjoy the exhibit!

From 5pm-8pm, on Saturday, January 31st, 2009, there will be a reception to celebrate the photography of local artist Linda Williamson. During the reception, jazz band, Moving Forward will be the entertainment for this already eventful night.

Artist Note:
Photography is my everything, after family and friends of course. My belief is that there is a truth in each photograph I take, be it of a person, place, or thing. Every time I look through the lens of my camera I'm magically set of on a Journey of beauty, peacefulness and preservation. The places I go give me a piece of mind, and a balance of soul just from their essence. I'm preserving, a memory, finding the truth and communicating it back to anyone that can relate and shares in these beliefs. My ultimate goal is to put a smile on someone’s heart and touch their inner beauty with images of the world that shapes us just by it's existence. I can only hope that you the viewer find the same passion for my photography as I do, and if you do, then I have truly succeeded.

LOCAL ARTIST LAURA HANLEY

Lowell | The Eggroll Café will host an artist's reception on Friday, November 10th from 7 to 10pm, celebrating the work of local artist Laura Hanley.

A woman with a secret, a forlorn looking man and a vibrant saxophone muted by a teddy bear. These are just some of the images that currently decorate the walls of the Eggroll Café. The artist of these beautiful images is Lowell resident Laura Hanley. Hanley, 22, graduated from UMass Lowell with a bachelor's degree in fine arts. Her unique combination of mosaic style art and music has drawn quite a bit of attention to this working artist. As a young child, Hanley loved jigsaw puzzles and as a young adult, learned about classical mosaics in school. Her artwork has been celebrated across the city and beyond, including Farmhouse Magazine and the Lowell Sun. Her most recent work is a series of five paintings, collectively called "Rhythm and Vibe." The mosaic collages, possibly to be featured at a local restaurant, stand an impressive 4 feet wide and 8 feet tall, each depicting a musical instrument, such as a piano and a saxophone. Hanley wants her audience to hear and feel the music as they look at her work, a goal which has been accomplished as her paintings come to life with their bright colors.

Hanley's mosaic collages, as well as selected paintings will be exhibited at the Eggroll Café until December 11. A reception will be held this Friday to celebrate Hanley's work, featuring live acoustic music and a variety of drinks, including beer and wine.

Join us for an evening of music and fine food, as Hanley's unique works come alive before you.

The café will also be offering their full menu of internationally inspired dishes. Their fusion specials are filled with fresh vegetables and include selected ingredients such as tofu, light soy and oriental spices.

It is located a block from the University of Massachusetts Lowell's north campus, at 110 University Ave, Lowell.

The cafe is looking for other local artists to display their work. Those interested should contact Meng Kit at (978) 970-3411 or meng@eggrollcafe.com.

CAMPUS REPORT :
EGGROLL CAFE ROCKS

By Haleigh Stanway
Lowell Sun Correspondent

How about a chesseburger eggroll and some bubble tea?

When you need a pick-me-up in between classes or on lunch break, head over to the Eggroll Cafe on University Avenue. The cozy, intimate and tropical atmosphere here gives you that well-deserved escape from the bustle.

Eggrolls are our specialty. They are affordable and high-quality, said Tang Kit, owner of the cafe which opened in February.

They are also unusual. From the popular cheeseburger, steak and cheese, spinach and feta, southwestern to curry chicken eggrolls, this is not your average Chinese takeout fare. Each eggroll comes with its own special dipping sauce to enhance these zany combinations. At $3.50 for three, it's a quick and affordable lunch.

For breakfast, don't miss the gourmet coffee-of-the-day, imported from Italy, and homemade pina colada or banana pudding muffins. For dessert, bite-size eggrolls, filled with sweet bananas and drizzled with honey and black sesame seeds, are another new taste sensation.

Replacing iced coffee on the quad, bubble tea has become the hottest new drink for UMass Lowell students. Tea is on the bottom, milk on top, and sweet tapioca pearls anchor the bottom. Shake it up and it turns from a sunset to a bright orange delight. Chewy tapioca pearls are an added bonus.

The best part is watching people try to poke a hole in the top for the first time. It's a fun drink, said Sengly Song, who has worked at the cafe for two months.

Located right across from UMass Lowell's North Campus, this cafe is a nice change from the sub shops lining the street. We wanted to give something to the students, a place for them to study, relax, and grab some coffee (fusion foods and healthy meals). That environment wasn't really offered before, said Kit.

Free wireless Internet will secure this cafe's popularity.

Student art is displayed on the walls and live music Thursdays have begun.

We have mostly acoustic and jazz players, really enjoyable music, said Meng Kit, one of the managers. Tonight, the 50 Ways will perform.

They started as customers that loved the bubble tea, said Kit, and now they are one of our regular bands.

On July 6, Monika Ohri's photography will be on display. The Eggroll Cafe on 110 University Ave., Lowell is open Monday thru Saturday, 9 a.m. to 10 p.m. For more information, visit www.eggrollcafe.com.
